The Hirsi Ali Case: "Voltaire and Erasmus Are Spinning in their Graves" - International - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News

The Hirsi Ali Case: "Voltaire and Erasmus Are Spinning in their Graves" - International - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News:
"Holland's most famous immigrant -- Ayaan Hirsi Ali -- has been stripped of her citizenship overnight following television revelations about news that's long been public: she lied a little on her application for asylum years ago. The controversial decision by the country's immigration minister has sparked outrage, and many are calling it a dark day for Dutch democracy.
"

This is the subject of conversation here: Iranians may be Eddie Haskells, but the Dutch are Mother Superiors: stern but caring (as the one from the Flying Nun is described; often making bad decisions because of sanctimony.

I'm sad that I don't find your e mail address on this site! I think that is an important blog: I think the blogs are a new, much important, tool of knowledge and for anyone, and so for Iranians, to show oneself at the rest of the world: now in the Occident of the world are just many prejudices about Iran and her people like Muslim fanatics, ant modernity and dangerous terrorists!

Well, to show an opposite reality is my little project!

PLEASE contact me as soon as possible

Is this true? I certainly hope the proposed law has been misrepesented in the Canadian Press. Law would require non-Muslim insignia

...the Iranian parliament, called the Islamic Majlis, passed a law this week setting a dress code for all Iranians, requiring them to wear almost identical "standard Islamic garments."

The law, which must still be approved by Iran's "Supreme Guide" Ali Khamenehi before being put into effect, also establishes special insignia to be worn by non-Muslims.

Iran's roughly 25,000 Jews would have to sew a yellow strip of cloth on the front of their clothes, while Christians would wear red badges and Zoroastrians would be forced to wear blue cloth.

If I were Iranian and this were true, I would braid a multi-colored ribbon and wear it with defiance and pride.

anonymous,
This is a fabricated nonsense story by national post of Canada. The national post withdrew the story, and deleted the news item from its website. There is not even a single word in the law passed in the iranian parliment that even remotely refer to religious minorities. Here is the translation of the passed bill:

1) Encouraging fabric designers and producers in using Iranian and Islamic patterns and styles in producing fabric and dress.
2) Respecting the traditional patterns and lively symbols of Iranian ethnic groups and paying attention to proper body coverage based on Islamic Sharia.
3) Taking advantage of research in obtaining original(to Iran) fabric patterns.
4) Encouraging the public in using the Iranian styles.
5) Supporting local producers of traditional clothes with loans and providing them exposure in clothes fairs and festivals.
6) Helping the public access to traditional clothes by establishing permanent dress fairs on local and regional bases.
7) Organizing regional (international) dress fair for exchanging experiences with other Muslim countries.
8) Inspecting and Controlling the imports of fabric and clothes to prevent the import of clothes incompatible with cultural, Islamic and national values.
9) This draft is written with coordination with the managing body in charge of clothing and dress.
10) Financial support for NGOs, unions, and non-governmental institutions in providing national clothing.
11) Media, in special the national TV, must help in establishing the usage of national clothing and they have to avoid advertising styles inconsistent with our culture.

maI was shocked to see the report in the National Post. I could not find a single person to confirm it here. It seems that the National Post can not confirm it either. See their own article:

"Experts say report of badges for Jews in Iran is untrue

Chris Wattie, National Post
Published: Friday, May 19, 2006
Several experts are casting doubt on reports that Iran had passed a law requiring the country’s Jews and other religious minorities to wear coloured badges identifying them as non-Muslims."

ET, what's with the news in New York Post, about Jews, Christians and Zorastrians being made to wear special colors or dress to differentiate them from Muslims. Any truth to that? Please let us know. Thanks

This is the New York Post article:

FOURTH REICH

May 20, 2006 -- Concerned U.S. officials and Jewish groups yesterday demanded answers from Iran after a shocking report that Tehran's radical leaders passed a Nazi-style law requiring Jews and Christians to wear identifying badges.

Jews would be forced to wear yellow cloth strips - like the Star of David that Jews were made to wear in Nazi Germany - while Christians would have to wear red strips.

It was bullcrap.
The Iranian embassy in Canada made a statement saying it's false, and many members of parliament (including the guy who supposedly bought the bill up)
denied it and said no such thing has happened.
The represantitive of Iran's Jewish community also denied it.
